P. B. SPRAGUE DIES SUDDENLY

A Victim to Bright's Disease Was One of Winterset's Successful Merchants in Early Days

Porter B. Sprague, one of the early settlers and among Winterset's first successful business men, died at his home in the south part of the city at midnight, Monday the 31st. His death was due to Bright's disease with which he had been afflicted for some time, though he was able to be about town until within a few days of his death.

Mr. Sprague was born near Columbus, Ohio, in 1839. He came to Iowa in 1849 and first engaged in the mercantile business at Agency and it was here that he was married to Nancy S. Packwood, who with one son, Ernest and one daughter, Mrs. Blanch McCall survive him.

In 1864 he moved to Winterset and engaged in business with Ed Brown. He retired from active business life sixteen years later but continued to make Winterset his home where he enjoyed the quiet of declining years and the respect and esteem of his friends and old time associates.

He accumulated considerable property and was the owner of three store buildings occupied by J. F. Tate, Warren Smith and T. L. Mullinix.
