Irvin W. Gordon Dies At Greenfield

Irvin W. Gordon, a native of Madison county and member of a well known family here, died Feb. 29 at his home in Greenfield, where he had lived for many years. He was 75 years of age.

Mr. Gordon was born near Winterset July 23, 1876, a son of William and Sarah Gowin Gordon.

Near surviving relatives include his wife; and three children by a former marriage, Mrs. Anna Howell of Winterset, Mrs. Barney Laizure of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Tom Gordon of Aumsville, Ore.; and a sister, Mrs. Minerva Augustine of Orient.

Funeral services were held March 2 at Greenfield and burial was made in the cemetery there.

IRVIN GORDON DIES SUDDENLY AT HOME HERE

Funeral services for I. W. Gordon, 75, were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Bickford Funeral Home in Greenfield. Rev. Glen E. Dilley, pastor of the Greenfield Presbyterian church, conducted the services.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Marian Thomson and Russell Piper with Mrs. R. W. Hoyt as accompanist. The selections, “Refuge” and “The Old Rugged Cross”.

Serving as casketbearers were Donald Wight, O. W. C. Brown, Stanley Church, Cecil Steadman, A. L. Dorsey, all of Greenfield, and Albert Clark of Winterset. Interment took place in the Greenfield cemetery.

Head Endres Legion post members with color guard in charge of Charles Black, attended the services at the funeral home and stood at attention during the burial services. Mr. Black, on behalf of the U.S. Government, presented Mrs. Gordon with the flag which draped the casket.

Mr. Gordon was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage about 8:30 o’clock Friday morning and lived but a short time following the stroke.

Irvin W. Gordon, son of Wm. I. Gordon and Sarah Gowin, was born in Madison county, Iowa on July 23, 1876, and passed away at his home in Greenfield on Friday morning, February 29th, 1952 at 3:30 a.m., having attained the age of 75 years, 6 months and 4 days.

On July 28, 1913, Mr. Gordon enlisted in the regular Army at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. His first three years of service was spent in Hawaii. Eight or nine months was served in the Border Patrol in Texas. Then the first World War came and he was sent to France, where he served for 18 months. He was wounded in the battle at Chateau Therry and the battle of Argonne.

He returned to the United States in March 1919. He was a member of the VFW Chapter 738 of Des Moines.

On Sept. 17, 1919, he was united in marriage to Miss Henrietta Norman, to whom he has been a loving and devoted husband.

He became a member of the Greenfield Presbyterian church on October 8, 1922. For the past 30 years he has expressed his faith in his Lord and his love of his church by faithful and devoted service for the cause of Christ. He was a trustee of the church for many years and spent much of his time and talents in repairing and improvements of the church. During the last three years he has helped to build the pastor’s study and helped to paint the manse. During all of his thirty years as a member of the church he has been faithful in attending Sunday School.

He is survived by two daughters and a son by a former marriage: Mrs. Anna Howell, of Winterset; Mrs. Barney Laizure of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and Tom Gordon, of Aumsville, Oregon. There are ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Minerva Augustine, of Orient, also survive him. Seven sisters and two brothers preceded him in passing.

All who knew him will mourn his loss.
