Life-Long Resident There Was 77 Years of Age
Derwin Travis, member of a well known family in the Peru community and a life-long resident of Madison county, died Friday Jan. 7 at Madison county Memorial hospital in Winterset. He had been ill at the hospital since Dec. 23.
Mr. Travis was 77 years of age. He was born in Madison county on Sept. 30, 1877, a son of John B. and Martha A. Travis.
Mr. Travis' life was spent in farming. He had been a member of the Methodist church since early life and was affiliated with the Masonic lodge.
He was married in 1900 to Elizabeth Jane Priest, who died in 1904, together with their infant daughter, Mildred. In 1906 he was married to Marie Gonseth whose death occurred in 1943. His third marriage occurred July 30, 1945 to Margaret Slinker who survives him.
He leaves two children, Mrs. Irma Loomis of Thayer and Dale Travis of Peru; four grandchildren; two great grandsons; four step children, Guy Slinker of Fremont, Nebr., Mrs. Mary Fisher of Crockett, Calif., Loyd Slinker of Minong, Wisc., and Mrs. Ruth Ferguson of Monroe; 10 step grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; a brother, Fred Travis; and a sister, Mrs. Maggie Priest, both of Peru.
Funeral services were held Sunday from the Peru Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. Arthur Weed, assisted by the Rev. Ray Harness and John Rectenbaugh.
Burial was made in the Ebenezer cemetery.
