Mr. and Mrs. William Lodge Die as Two Automobile Collide
Mr. and Mrs. William T. Lodge, long-time residents of Bevington were killed last Friday evening when the car driven by Mr. Lodge was struck by a car driven by John A. Berg, 22, of Martensdale. Mr. Lodge was 74 years of age and his wife was 71.
The accident occurred about 6:10 p.m. at the intersection of highway No. 92 and the Bevington main street.
Mr. Lodge accompanied by his wife was driving south on the Bevington street and investigating officers said he apparently drove onto the highway directly into the path of the Berg car, which was approaching from the west.
The Berg car hit the Lodge car broadside and knocked it into the grader ditch south of the highway. Both Mr. and Mrs. Lodge were thrown out of their car. Both were dead when officers reached the scene. Berg's car also plunged into the grader ditch after the crash and hit a telephone pole there, snapping it off. Berg was not thrown from his car. He was brought to the Madison county Memorial hospital in Winterset for treatment of head injuries and shock. He was released Saturday.
Berg is a student at the State University of Iowa at Iowa City and he and Richard Greenwood of Winterset had driven here that afternoon to spend the week end at home. Berg had brought Greenwood to Winterset and was returning to Martensdale when the accident occurred.
The deaths of Mr. and Mrs. Lodge raises to four the number of highway fatalities so far this year in Madison county. Previous deaths were those of Raymond H. Baker of St. Charles on Jan. 12 and Robvert LaBron of Winterset on March 30.
