Eugene William Martens, 83, died July 10, 2007 at the Community Care Center in Stuart.

Memorial Services were held Saturday, July, 14, at Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter with Rev. Dr. Ronald Rall officiating. Burial was at Dexter Cemetery, with military rites by the Earlham American Legion Post # 158. Kuhn Funeral Homes was in charge of arrangements.

Eugene W. Martens was born August 8, 1923, in rural Madison County, to Louis and Anna (Boos) Martens. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II.

Eugene was preceeded in death by his parents, wives Anna Lenore (Scar) Martens and Margaret (Rall) Martens, daughter Marilyn Martens, and brother Kenneth Martens.

Eugene is survived by one daughter Susan Griffith of Huntsville, Ala., one son Steve Martens of Dexter, Iowa, four stepsons Ronald Rall of St. Louis, Mo.; Douglas Rall of Greenville, S.C.; Stephen Rall of Minneapolos,Minn. and Mark Rall of Clear Lake, Iowa, one granddaughter, two grandsons, two step granddaughters, and brother Gordon Martens of Booneville, Iowa.

Eugene W. Martens was born the son of Louis and Anna Boos Martens in rural Madison County, Iowa on August 8, 1923 and died at the Community Care Center in Stuart, Iowa on July 10, 2007 at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 2 days.

Eugene graduated from the Van Meter High School in 1941 and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II. Eugene and Anna Lenore Scar were married at the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter on December 1, 1946. This union was blessed with three children: Susan, Marilyn and Steve.

Eugene was a life-long farmer in the Earlham and Van Meter areas. He raised hogs and cattle, however was very proud of his purebred Hereford cattle.

Eugene was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Dexter, an Elder and a Sunday School teacher, serving on most of the boards and committees within the church. He was a member of the Earlham Lions Club, a Funk’s G Hybrid seed salesman and a board member of the Earlham Farmers Co-op.

Eugene and Lenore traveled to places like Switzerland and Mexico before her death in 1982. In February of 1987 Eugene and Margaret Rall were married at the Lutheran Church in Creston, where they lived until her death in 1997. Eugene and Margaret traveled to Alaska as well as numerous trips around the country. Eugene also traveled with his grandsons Eric and Kevin to Canada, Utah and Wyoming. He also made a trip to Hawaii with brother Gordon and his wife Jill. During his retirement Eugene was an avid woodworker, building bedroom sets for his grandchildren. He also built various other pieces of furniture for family members and sold items at bazaars and craft fairs. He made most of his projects out of home sawed and cured walnut lumber. Playing “Pitch” in the local card club was a favorite pastime for Eugene.

Eugene leaves the following family to celebrate his life: daughter Susan Griffith and husband Tom of Huntsville, AL; son Steve Martens and wife Angie of Dexter, IA; brother Gordon Martens and wife Jill of Booneville, IA; granddaughter Katie Griffith of Savannah, GA; grandsons Eric Martens of Mission, KS and Kevin Martens of Dexter, IA; step granddaughters Emily Stubbs of Savanah, GA and Sallie Chung of Huntsville, AL; step-sons Ronald Rall of St. Louis, MO; Douglas Rall of Greenville, SC; Stephen Rall of Minneapolis, MN and Mark Rall of Clear Lake, IA.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, Lenore and Margaret, daughter Marilyn and brother Kenneth.

Interment in the Dexter cemetery.
