JAMES SWIFT FORMER RESIDENT DIED SEPT. 11

Early Day Rock Island Agent in Winterset Was Born at Bevington

The death of James Lawrence Swift at the age of 82 years, occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. C. Albers in Des Moines early Sunday morning September 11th. Mr. Swift was born near Bevington and suffered the loss of his right arm in an accident at an early age. He was graduated from Simpson college and later taught mathematics at that place for a number of years. Then he learned the telegraph trade and during the eighties and nineties, he was stationed at the Rock Island depot in Winterset.He moved to Des Moines in 1901, and has since resided there.

He was married to Sarah Amanda Himes in 1884 and to this union was born seven children, four daughters and three sons all of whom are living and were present at his funeral. His children are: Mrs. Margaret Albers, Mrs. H. F. Willis, Frank, Leo, and John all of Des Moines, Mrs. R. W. Fogarty of Los Angeles and Mrs. Paul Dies of Portland, Oregon. Also twelve grandchildren and one sister, Miss Margaret Swift of Waterloo survive.

Funeral services were held at Saint Anthony's church at ten o'clock Thursday morning, Sept. 15 and interment was made in the Glendale cemetery at that place. Mrs. Swift died in Des Moines in 1932.
