Death of David Hallgarth

David Hallgarth died last Wednesday morning after an lingering illness lasting for more than a year. Owing to defective eyesight it has been difficult for him to get about for many years and during all this time he has been more or less care to his relatives. During the past year his general health has been such as to require continuous supervision and about a month ago he began to fail rapidly.

He was one of the oldest settlers of the county locate here in 1848 or 1849. He first located on Middle River near Drakes Ford. He enlisted in Co. F, 39th regiment and was discharged with the regiment. He then located on the farm south and west of his previous house where he continued to live till a number of years ago when he removed to Winterset, where has continued to live till his death. The funeral took place today at 2:30 p.m. at the Christian church, Rev. E. E. Bennett officiating.

The members of Pitzer Post G. A. R. turned out in a body and the ritual service was recited at the burial. The deceased was about 85 years old. Among the relatives who at the funeral were, Mrs. Ladd and Mrs. Lutz, and the widow formerly Mrs. Holwell who was his second wife, the first Mrs. Hallgarth having died many years ago.

David Holgarth was born in Switzerland county, Indiana, July 17th, 1824, and died March 8th, 1908. He was married in 1847 to Nancy Bonta, who died Nov. 26th, 1844(sic) . He was a soldier of the civil war enlisting Aug. 22nd, 1862, as a private in Co. F, 39 regiment of Iowa Volunteers, and was honorably discharged from service June 21st, 1865.

He was married to Anna Hollowell, April 6th, 1897. There were six children as a result of the first marriage. He united with the church in early life, at the age of twenty-five and erected the family alter in the home, the influence of which was wholesome on the children, and its fruits manifest in their lives. In 1897, soon after his second marriage, he became a member of the Christian Church, and was a faithful christian until the Master called him home. He was a stron advocate of temperance and righteousness.

The funeral services were held from the Christian Church, conducted by his paftor, after which the remains were laid to rest to await the voice of the resurrection angel. He leaves a wife, two brothers and two children to mourn their loss.

David Halgarth, an old soldier, a member of the 39th Iowa, died at his home in this city in the southwest part of town Friday. His funeral was held in the Christian church this afternoon. Mr. Halgarth was 84 years of age.
