MRS. IRA PAINTER BURIED AT LEWIS

Madison County Resident for Past 42 Years Died Saturday

Mrs. Ira Painter, a resident of Madison county for 42 years, died at a Winterset nursing home Saturday, Aug. 6, after a lengthy illness. She was 77 years of age.

Mrs. Painter was born in Pottawattamie county, Dec. 28, 1877. She was the former Ella Fleming, daughter of John and Sarah Fleming. Her early life was spent in Pottawattamie and Cass counties.

She was married July 18, 1895 to Ira Painter. They came to Madison county 42 years ago. Until 1950 they farmed near Winterset. Since then, they had lived in Winterset.

She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Beulah McNamara of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Blanche Jones of Winterset, and Mrs. Genevieve Carter of Indianola; four sons, Dayton Painter of Winterset, Verne Painter, Ira Painter, Jr., and Phil Painter, all of Grand Island, Nebr; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Emma Rhoades of Seymour, Mrs. Mable Ackerman of Griswold and Mrs. Sada Young of Atlantic.

RITES HEARD ON LONG DISTANCE

The funeral services held from the Richards Funeral home in Winterset Monday for Mrs. Ira Painter were heard in Grand Island, Nebr., by a special long-distance speaker-phone hookup.

This unusual installation was made for the benefit of one of Mrs. Painter's sons, Verne M. Painter of Grand Island, who was prevented by illness from attending his mother's services. Painter has been hospitalized for a week in St. Francis hospital at Grand Island for treatment of a back condition, and it is impossible for him to leave the hospital at this time.

Winterset management of the Northwestern Bell Telephone company received a request Sunday evening to install the special long distance hookup. By taking emergency measures, they managed to get the installation in operation by time for the funeral.

Verne Painter, formerly of Winterset, has been a resident of Grand Island now for many years. He is employed by the Union Pacific railroad there.
