Killed by a Horse

A fatal occurrence took place early Saturday morning at Hiram Smith’s place seven miles west of town. His son, W. S. (Scott) Smith, was harnessing the team in the barn very early in the morning to get a good start at harvesting. He threw the harness on the horse and stepped back to adjust the crupper, when the animal kicked him violently in the breast with both feet. He uttered some exclamation, stepped to the door and fell prostrate.

The man who was with him ran to the house for help, but the first to arrive found him dead. It was an unusually sad accident, as he was in the full vigor of young manhood and was taken without a moment’s warning. He left a wife and one child, besides his aged parents to mourn his untimely end. The will have the help and of the entire community where they live.

Obituary

Walter Scott Smith, son of Hiram and Jane Smith, on the Bluffs road, was born in Webster township, Madison county, June 1, 1867, married Miss Flora Bond January 1, 1893. Two children were born to them; the older died December 15, 1894.

Mr. Smith lived on his father’s farm until about 5:30 a.m. July 23, 1898. He received a kick near the heart from a horse and died almost instantly, aged 31 years, 1 month and 22 days.

The funeral service was preached Sunday 3 o’clock p.m. July 24, to the largest religious audience we have seen in the county, from the text: 1 John 3:2, 3, by the pastor A. H. Rusk in the Maple Grove Evangelical Church, assisted by the Evangelical pastor.

So far as we know, Mr. Smith was one of Madison county’s most worthy citizens. His body rests in the Wright (sic) cemetery. His parents, two sisters, wife and son survive him.
