Page 2, Column 1Mary Esther Holmes, daughter of Archibald and Elza Jane Holmes, was born in Madison county, Iowa, November 6, 1863 and passed away July 25, 1955, the last of a family of 10 children.
She was united in marriage to Richard Elsworth Lyons in 1890 and to this union were born five daughters—Merle Lawrence of New Virginia, Blanche of Glendale, Calif., Jessie of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Flossie Hasslinger of Apple Valley, Calif. The daughter, Florence Maude Kale, preceded her in death in 1917. Besides her four daughters, she leaves nine grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Her husband passed away June 16, 1919.
In early years of her life she became a member of the Truro Methodist church and at the time of death her membership was with the First Methodist church of Glendale, Calif.
Her home was in Madison county, Iowa, until 1919—then, after 15 years residence in Osceola, Iowa, she went to California to make her home with her daughter, Jessie.
Mother Lyons’ life stemmed from early pioneer home loving people. She kept a written daily family record 38 of her 91 years or until her eyesight no longer permitted her to do so. She lived a long life and a good life and many times in these closing years expressed longing to be at rest. Shortly before her death she was heart repeating: “My heavenly home is bright and fair, no pain nor death can enter there. A glittering tower the sun outshines, the Heavenly mansion shall be mine.”
Funeral services were held from the Kale funeral home in Truro, Saturday afternoon, July 30. Interment was in Young’s cemetery at Truro.
