Thomas H. Reed, Winterset

Thomas H. Reed, 76, of Winterset died of respiratory failure Jan. 21, 2002 at Madison County Health Care Systems in Winterset.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at the First Presbyterian Church in Winterset with the Rev. Jim Howland officiating. Immediately following the services, military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 8142 and American Legion Post 184, both of Winterset. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25 at the Vinton Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Jim Blair and Jim Howland officiating. Visitation will be held today (Wednesday, Jan. 23) at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset from noon until 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 5-8 p.m. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton immediately following services at the Vinton Presbyterian Church.

Thomas Reed was born Aug. 10, 1925 to E. Gordon and Anna (Delfs) Reed of Vinton in Benton county. He graduated from Vinton High School and later attended mortuary school in St. Louis, Mo., where he obtained a degree in mortuary science. On Aug. 20, 1950, he married Ruth Elwick in Vinton. He had resided in Winterset since 1968. Prior to that he had lived in Vinton. Tom had worked for Fareway Stores Inc. for 25 years, retiring in 1986 as manager of the meat department. He was a Mason and a member of the V.F.W., American Legion (50 years) and First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset (serving as session member). He also served on the boards of Madison County Memorial Hospital and Winterset Utilities and had been a city councilman in Vinton. He was a United States Marine veteran, having served in the Pacific theater during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Winterset; a daughter, Annette Reed of Aurora, Colo.; a son, Steven Reed (wife Marla) of Winterset; and four grandchildren.
