Willis Newby, Mount Ayr

Willis Gene Newby, 68, of Mount Ayr died Feb. 15, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr, with the Rev. Susan Thomas officiating. Burial was at Bedford City Cemetery.

Willis Newby was born Oct. 5, 1934 in Taylor County to Emory and Cordys (Cordell) Newby. He was raised on farms near Platteville, Blockton and Bedford. On Dec. 20, 1952 he was united in marriage to Lois A. Harris in Bedford. They resided in Glenwood for a short time, where he was employed as a lineman. They later returned to Taylor County to farm. In 1962, Willis started working for the Ringgold County Road Department, retiring in 1992. He had resided in Mount Ayr since 1971.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Roger LeRoy Newby; a brother, Billy Newby; and a half-brother, Harold Durfey.

He is survived by his wife, Lois of Mount Ayr; five daughters, Patty Newby and Diana Dredge, both of Mount Ayr, Sandra Clark and Debra Newby, both of Winterset, and Susan Schuelke of Solon; a son, Kenny Newby of Stuart; a brother, Marvin Newby of Adair; a half-brother, Wilbur Durfey of Clarinda; three sisters, Wilma Newby of Clarinda, Rosemary Kirchner of Trenton, Mo., and Janet Sheldon of Indianola; and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr.
