Veteran of Recent War Had Been in Failing Health
Mansel J. Holmes, a well known business man in Winterset in recent years and a veteran of the recent war, died at his home here Tuesday night, following a heart attack. He was 41 years of age.
Mr. Holmes was born in Union county Dec. 10, 1907, a son of Wilson D. and Louise C. Holmes. His early life was spent in Creston and he graduated from the high school there and the Creston Junior college. He came to Winterset 16 years ago and was employed at Hendersons store.
He was married July 28, 1941 to Lola D. Franklin. For some time they operated the former Moorhead store on highway 92 west of Winterset, from where he left to enter the U. S. army during the recent war. He served 39 months and was discharged with the grade of technical sergeant.
After the war he operated the A. C. E. grocery in Winterset until his health failed.
He is survived by his wife, his mother, Mrs. W. D. Holmes of Creston, and a sister, Mrs. Meroa Campbell of Kansas City, Kan.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. this Friday from the Richards Funeral home in charge of the Rev. I. E. Linkletter, pastor of the Winterset Church of Christ. Burial will be made at Creston with graveside services there at 3:30 p.m.
