CAR CRASH FATAL TO MATTHIAS J. HOGAN

Former Winterset Youth Is Victim of Tragedy at Sioux City

Matthias J. Hogan, aged 29, son of Mrs. Agnes Hogan of Winterset was fatally injured Saturday night at Sioux City when a car in which he was riding left the road and crashed into a fence in the outskirts of the city.

Mr. Hogan had been employed in Sioux City for the past month as a pharmacist and was riding home with a friend when the accident occurred. He was thrown through a door of the car and suffered a fractured skull. He was taken to a hospital and relatives here were notified. His mother left for Sioux City immediately and arrived in time to be with her son at his death.

The young man's death is felt with sincere regret in Winterset. He was well known here, where he was reared and attended the public schools. He enjoyed a wide circle of friends, and was known as a man of unusually fine character.

Mr. Hogan was born in Des Moines on February 13, 1909 the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hogan. His father died in 1910, and thereafter the family made their home with Mrs. Hogan's father, Terence O'Laughlin, west of this city. After graduating from the Winterset grade schools, he attended Dowling Academy in Des Moines, graduating with the class of 1926. He attended college at Creighton university in Omaha, graduating in 1932 as a pharmaceutical chemist. He worked in Omaha for some time and at the time of his death was employed by the Toller Drug company in Sioux City.

Near surviving relatives in addition to his mother, are his brother, Clarence Hogan and his grandfather, Terence O'Laughlin.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning from St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset in charge of the pastor the Rev. William Hahessy and Monsignor J. J. Boylan of Des Moines. Burial was made in St. Ambrose cemetery in Des Moines.
