MRS. ARTIE B. TOWNSEND DIES

Mrs. Artie B. Townsend, well-known Macksburg resident, died early Wednesday morning, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. G. Barnes of Corning. Mrs. Townsend who was 70 years of age, had been ill for some time, and since February had been cared for in the Barnes home.

Funeral services for Mrs. Townsend will be Friday afternoon, June 14th, at the Methodist church in Macksburg, at 2:30 p.m.

Mrs. Townsend was the former Artie Mack, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. H. Mack, pioneer settlers of Macksburg.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Barnes of Corning, a son, M. L. Townsend of Burlington, and a sister, Mrs. Onie B. Hixon of Macksburg.

MORTUARY

Artie B. Mack Townsend, the youngest daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. H. Mack, was born October 28, 1869, in Grand River township, Madison county, Iowa, and peacefully departed this life on June 12, 1940 at 12:30 a.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. G. Barnes in Corning, Iowa, at the age of 70 years, 7 months and 14 days.

Her early life was spent in Macksburg where she completed the course of study in the high school. She was converted at the age of eleven years and united with the Macksburg Methodist church Sept. 12, 1880. From that time she has always lived a devoted Christian life. A number of years ago she received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and since then her life has been one of unusual consecration and communion with God.

On October 28, 1888 she was united in marriage to Edwin L. Townsend. To this union was born two children, Mack LeVon and Lois Ferne. The early years of their married life were spent in Macksburg, and later they moved to Des Moines where they lived many years. Mr. Townsend preceded her in death March 22, 1932.

Mrs. Townsend has been afflicted for nineteen years. The greater portion of this time she and her sister, Mrs. Onie B. Hixon, lived together in the parental home in Macksburg and the last year and a half she has been with her daughter, Mrs. F. G. Barnes of Corning, Iowa.

During the last ten years of her suffering she was especially inspired in writing poetry.

Those surviving her are a son, Mack LeVon Townsend of Burlington, a daughter, Mrs. F. G. Barnes of Corning, a sister, Mrs. Onie B. Hixon of Macksburg, nine grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Short funeral services were held at the Hilliard funeral home in Corning, Thursday, June 13 at 1:30 p. m., after which her earthly body was taken to the parental home in Macksburg so that the many relatives and friends could view her remains until Friday, June 14th at 2:30 p.m., when the funeral was held at the Methodist church. The services were conducted by Dr. W. A. Morgan, district superintendent, using as his text 1 John 3 2. The pastor, Rev. M. D. Summerbell assisted by offering prayer and reading Psalm 23 and Revelation 21:3 4.

A quartette consisting of Mrs. Hazel Loomis, Mrs. Neva Baker, Jay Steele and Jay Thompson sang “Abide with Me”, “Somebody Cares” and “O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go”. Burial wss made in the Moon cemetery near Macksburg.

The pallbearers, her nephews, great nephews and the last named a grandson, were as follows Coyt R. Herren, C. Dean Herren, Alpha Wolfe, Glen Wolfe, Lee Wolfe, Raymond Wolfe, Russell Wolfe and Paul Barnes.
