Former Earlham Man, 71, Had Lived in Des Moines Since Retirement From Newspaper Business
Sylvester Hockett, former Earlham man, died at his home in Des Moines, February 26. He was past 71 years of age and had retired from business in 1917. He formerly conducted a newspaper at Milo, Iowa. Funeral services were February 28 at the Valley Funeral Home in Valley Junction with Rev. B. R. Van Dyke of Carlisle, Mr. Hockett's former pastor officiating. Burial was in the Glendale Cemetery at Des Moines.
OBITUARY
Sylvester Hockett, son of Joel and Ann Hockett was born February 20, 1863 in Henry County, Iowa, near (illegible). While he was quite young the family moved to Madison County. Here he grew to manhood and on July 8, 1886 was married to Sarah E. Mendenhall.
They made their home in and near Earlham, Iowa until 1910 when they went to Milo, Iowa, where the deceased engaged in the newspaper business. They moved to Des Moines in 1917, and lived there until his death February 26, 1934 at the age of 71 years and 6 days.
Sylvester Hockett was from early years a member of the Friends Church at Earlham but after moving to Milo transferred his membership to the Methodist Episcopal church.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Sarah E. Hockett, their two sons, Charles and Clarence, with their wives and four grandchildren, all of Des Moines; father, mother, sisters and brother have all preceded him.
