DEATH OF LLOYD SPEER

Lloyd Speer, well known Penn township farmer, died last Wednesday at the age of 64 years.

Mr. Speer, the son of William and Mary Speer, was born in Scott county, Iowa, August 21, 1875, but came to this county with his parents when he was two years of age. The family settled on a farm near Pitzer, where he grew to manhood. He attended the local public schools, and the Dexter Normal school.

His marriage to Miss Cora L. Marsten was solemnized on New Year's eve, 1902, and they lived on a farm southwest of Dexter for thirty-seven years. They have been the parents of six children: Alice Bosley and DeLoss Speer of Earlham, Leone and Wilbur Speer of Dexter, Lucille Payton of Winterset and Mildred Speer of Des Moines. He also leaves six grandchildren, and the following brother and sisters: Ada Eyerly of Macksburg, Clair Lyddon of Adair, Anna Hampton of Portland, Oregon, Bert Speer of Elk, Washington, and Howard Speer of Los Angeles, Cal.

In early life he was a member of the United Presbyterian church at Pitzer, and later he and Mrs. Speer joined the Methodist church at at the time of his death was a member of the board of trustees of the Penn Center church.

The Rev. J. H. Feedline assisted by the Rev. Mr. Moore, conducted his funeral services at the Penn Center church last Friday at 2:30 o'clock.

Lloyd Speer, son of William and Mary Speer was born in Scott county, Iowa, August 21, 1875 and passed away April 24, 1940, aged 64 years, five months and 27 days. When only two years old he came with his parents to Madison county, Iowa, and settled on a farm near Pitzer where he grew to young manhood. He attended the public schools in Madison county and later at Dexter Normal school.

On New Year's eve 1902 he was united with Cora L. Marsten. To this union were born six children as follows: Alice Bosley of Earlham; DeLoss Speer of Earlham; Leone Speer of Dexter; Wilbur Speer of Dexter; Lucille Payton of Winterset; and Mildred Speer of Des Moines.

He lived on a farm southwest of Dexter, for 37 years, where he moved after his marriage. He was held in the very highest esteem by all.

There are six grandchildren and the following brothers and sistes: Ada Eyerly of Macksburg; Claire Lyddon of Adair, Iowa; Anna Hampton of Portland, Oregon; Bert Speer of Elk, Washington; and Howard Speer of Los Angeles, California. Ross Speer a brother and Alice Murray a sister preceded him in death a few years ago.

When quite young he united with the United Presbyterian church at Pitzer and later on he with Mrs. Speer united with the Methodist church. At the time of his decease he was a member of the board of trustees of Penn Center church. Mr. Speer was a fine neighbor and a Christian who was loyal to his church and until failing health prevented this, was a regular attendant at church and Sunday School. His loved ones and his many friends will greatly miss him. He had gone to his crowning and his good works will continue to live after him.

The funeral was held at the Penn Center Methodist church last Friday at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. J. H. Freedline. Mrs. Freedline played the organ.
