Laura J. Smith was born in Larue, Kentucky September 1854. She with her parents came to Iowa when she was but fourteen years of age. In 1872 she married to Wm. Hartman. Two years later she became a Christian, and united with the Baptist church. She loved her church and was faithful in her attendance till affliction complied her to remain at home.
To her were born nine children, seven sons and two daughters. One died at the age of six years. All the others remain till the death of their mother, they with the father and a number of relatives mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother, wife and friend.
The funeral services were held from the home conducted by Rev. E. E. Bennett, of the Christian church, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Winterset cemetery.

Mrs. Wm. Hartman died at her home in the east part of the city Monday. She has been a sufferer for several years. She was a member of the Baptist church of this city. The funeral was held at three o’clock Tuesday afternoon and the interment was made in the Winterset cemetery.
