JEFF PORTER DIES IN AUTO ACCIDENT

Peru Resident Was Injured Fatally When Car Failed to Make Corner

Jefferson Porter of Peru was fatally injured Monday night when the car in which he was a passenger failed to make a corner southwest of that town and plunged 200 feet down a steep hillside before crashing into a ditch there.

Grover Hogue, who was driving the car, was later arrested by Sheriff A. E. Null, and when arraigned in district court Monday he pleaded guilty to charges of driving while intoxicated. He was sentenced by Judge E. W. Dingwell to serve 10 months in the county jail.

Hogue and the other two occupants of the car, J. J. Kirsch and William Henthorne, escaped with minor bruises.

The fatal accident occurred shortly before midnight. Porter's fatal injuries were caused by the gearshift lever, which pierced his abdomen. He died on the way to the hospital about four hours later.

Porter was 78 years old, and was long a well-known resident of Peru. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. John Martin of Boone, and a son and another daughter in Colorado. His former wife also lived in Boone.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from Ramsey-Richards funeral home here, in charge of the Rev. Tom Foglesong, pastor of the Church of Christ.
