Wednesday, April 24, 1940JOHN NOLAN OF UNION TOWNSHIP DIED FRIDAY
Funeral Rites Held Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church Here
John Nolan, veteran Union township resident, died at his home last Friday after a fatal illness of about a year. He would have been 75 years of age in July.
Mr. Nolan was one of Madison county's oldest residents, and was widely-known throughout this community. He was the son of Patrick and Elizabeth Nolan, and was born in Iowa City. His parents moved to Nebraska when he was a baby, but they returned to Union township when he was a small child, and this township had since been his home. He was married to Lizzie Hartley in May, 1900, and they were the parents of four children.
He is survived by his wife; and two sons, Phil Nolan at home, and Joe Nolan of Oklahoma. He also leaves a brother, Joe Nolan of Kansas. One daughter, Cecelia, preceded her father in death 10 years ago, and a daughter, Katie, died in infancy. The brother and sisters who have preceded him in death were Lawrence Nolan, Mrs. Annie Kirby, Mrs. Lizzie Sprague, and Mrs. James McNamara.
Funeral services were held with requiem high mass from St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset Monday, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. William Hahessy. Burial was made in St. Patrick's cemetery in Lee township.
