Eugene Mack Crosswait was born at Glenwood, Iowa on May 17, 1871. After several years of failing health, he passed away March 30, 1950 at the age of seventy-eight years.
Mr. Crosswait was one of twelve children born to Eli Mack and Mary Elizabeth Crosswait. His parents, six brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
During his childhood, Mr. Crosswait lived on farms in Mills, Cass and Dallas counties. He came to Earlham as a young man and except for a few years in Des Moines and California, he has been a resident of this community.
On October 26, 1892 at Earlham, he was united in marriage to Agnes Pauline Thomson. To this union seven children were born, four boys and three girls. One son, Scott, died in 1927.
Mr. Crosswait was editor, barber, postmaster, and banker in Earlham. For several years he was a representative of the International Harvester Co. He served as fieldman for two land banks and the real estate department of the State of Iowa.
He joined the Methodist church whiile living at Dexter and sang in the choir for many years. He had been active in the Odd Fellows and Masonic Lodges in the latter order; he was a district lecturer and a member of the Shrine.
He served as school director and president of the board and was a booster for community improvement.
Through his varied business interests and his lodge associations, Mr. Crosswait made a host of friends throughout the state as well as in Earlham. He was deeply concerned in the welfare of others and was always ready to lend a helping hand. He made a home for his widowed mother and orphaned brothers and sister and assisted many others when they needed it most.
Besides his widow, survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Paul Stillman of Glendale,California; Mrs. Russell Rose of Jefferson City, Missouri; and Mrs. W. E. Wedel of Orange, California; three sons; Earle of Sibley, Iowa; Glenn of Waterloo, Iowa; and Lloyd of Wichita, Kansas; twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. One sister; Mrs. Lloyd Long of Fonda, Iowa; and three brothers; Ernest of Lake City, Iowa, Joe, of Washington, D.C., and Robert of Rapid City, South Dakota.
Funeral services were held in the Earlham Methodist church April 3 at 1:30 p.m. in charge of Rev. C. A. Crouse. Interment was in the Masonic cemetery at Des Moines.
