MRS. CLARA LEVEKE SUCCUMBS FRIDAY

Death Came Suddenly to 80-Year Old Resident of Winterset

Clara Perkins Leveke, well-known Winterset resident, died at her home on North Second street, last Friday morning. Mrs. Leveke had been in apparently good health, and on the day previous to her death, had attended a dinner at the home of her niece, Mrs. Eugene McNamara in observance of her eightieth birthday.

Mrs. Leveke was born Sept. 5, 1860, at Maple Grove in Madison county; she was the daughter of Erastus G. and Rosetta Merrill Perkins, and lived most of her life in this community. There were two brothers and three sisters, all of whom have preceded her in death.

Her mother, the daughter of a Methodist minister, was born and educated in New Hampshire. Her father was educated at Newberry Seminary in New Hampshire. In 1847, his father, being congressman from New Hampshire, E. G. Perkins, was appointed by President Pierce as clerk in the census office, and for a time resided in Washington, D. C. In 1851 he and his family came to this county and settled at Maple Grove. Mrs. Leveke attended the Maple Grove school which was on the home farm, and also Jackson No. 7 in Jackson township. She completed her education at Simpson college, and then taught school for 30 years in Earlham and Winterset.

While very young she joined the West Star church which her parents helped organize. This membership was later transferred to the Methodist church in Winterset, where she had various offices conducted with the church. She taught in the Sunday school for many years, was a member of the church board and was secretary of the Ladies Aid for 28 years. Mrs. Leveke was the last charter member of the Woman's Home Missionary society and took an active part in W.C.T.U. as well as other club activities.

On January 1, 1912 she married Henry Leveke, who passed away Nov. 8, 1918.

Mrs. Leveke gave a home to a nephew, Deloss Perkins Shull of Sioux City, and a niece, Mrs. Eugene McNamara of Winterset. She also leaves five other nephews, Raymond D. Breakenridge of Winterset, Dr. H. G. Breakenridge of Chicago, and John, Charles, and DeWitt Perkins all of California.

The Rev. Walter A. Samp assisted by Rev. A. P. Keast, conducted her funeral services at the Methodist church here Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. and burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
