Arthur "Art" Becker, 60, of Boone, died of cancer Aug. 1, 2004 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
A funeral Mass was held today at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone with the Rev. Clem Currans officiating. A graveside service and burial will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at the St. Joseph Cemetery in St. Joseph, Iowa.
Art Becker was born Aug. 12, 1943 in Algona to Peter and Bertha (Thul) Becker. He graduated from Algona Garrigan High School in 1961 and the University of Iowa in Iowa City in 1966. In 1967 he received a master's degree in civil engineering also from Iowa. On Dec. 30, 1988 he married Kathleen Scullen, a former Winterset resident in Creston. Art had been the director of engineering for Fareway Stores, Inc. in Boone since August of 1988. From 1972 to 1988 he was the city engineer and public works director for Creston. He also worked for Pittsburgh Des Moines Steel, Shive Hattery Engineering Consultants and was a grain farmer in Creston and St. Joseph.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Maurice Becker.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen of Boone; three sons, Douglas Becker of West Des Moines, Michael Becker of Polk City and Grant Long of Creston; two daughters, Lisa Becker of Liberty, Mo., and Megan Messler of Boone; his mother Bertha of Bode; three brothers, Allen Becker of Humboldt, Chuck Becker of Stratford and Jim Becker of Minneapolis, Minn.; and six grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Schroeder Memorial Chapel in Boone.
