Obituary – Mrs. Maria Hazen

Mrs. Maria Allen Hazen was born Sept. 8, 1832, on an island called South Hero, in Lake Champlain, belonging to Vermont and died at her home three and one half miles southeast of Van Meter, Sunday evening, August 10, 1913 at the ripe old age of 80 years 11 months and two days. After the death of her parents, she with her three brothers and three sisters came west to Clayton County, Iowa.

This is about the year 1852. October 15, 1853 she was united in marriage with Emerous Hazen. To this union, two children were born, Frank and Hattie Hazen. In the year 1867, the family moved to Madison County and located on the farm where they have since resided. September 25, 1867, the daughter, Miss Hattie, passed to the great beyond. March 26, 1880, the husband and father also died, thus leaving the mother and son to fight life’s battles.

Early in life she gave her heart to God, and identified herself with the M. E. church. This was in 1871, when the Union Chapel class was first organized, and when they worshiped in the Union school house. This was about three years before the church was built. Grandma Hazen was the last of a family of seven children to cross over the river of death. She leaves to mourn one son, Frank Hazen, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. These with a very large circle of friends.

The funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the Union Chapel church, conducted by Rev. A. E. Elliott of Des Moines, who was a friend of the family and also a former pastor of this church and interment was made in the beautiful cemetery close by the church. The pastor of the church and Rev. J. H. Young also a former pastor, assisting in the services.

Note: Burial was in Union Chapel Cemetery in Jefferson Twp of Madison County, Iowa
