A. W. JOHNSTON OF ST. CHARLES DIES

Long-Time Resident There Was Approaching 80 Years of Age.

St. Charles--(Special)--A. W. Johnston, life-long resident of this community died at Clarinda, Aug. 15. He lacked but five days of being 80 years old.

Mr. Johnston had lived approximately 50 years on a farm just east of St. Charles.

He is survived by one son, Fred Johnston, and three daughters, Mrs. Bess Johnson of New Virginia, Mrs. Inez Hart of Granger and Leah of Oklahoma in addition to 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He also leaves three sisters Mrs. Mary M. Roberts and Mrs. Jemima McGinnis of St. Charles, and Mrs. Hester Switzer of Lake Worth, Fla., and two brothers, J. W. Johnston of Des Moines and Albert Johnston of Ft. Madison.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J. F. Arnold at the Methodist church and burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.

LAST RITES FOR A. W. JOHNSTON

St. Charles Man, 79, Died Last Thursday. Early Settlers’ Third Son

Funeral services for A. W. Johnston, who died last Thursday, have been held at St. Charles, conducted by the Rev. John F. Arnold.

Johnston was the third son of Jehu M. and Hester Johnston who were early settlers in South township. he was born Aug. 21, 1860 and would soon have been 80 years of age. Johnston was married to Sallie Leftwich, Feb. 22, 1887, and soon moved to a farm east of St. Charles. They lived there until two years ago when they moved to the home of their daughter, Mrs. Bessie Johnston of New Virginia.

He is survived by one son, Fred of Seattle, Wash.; three daughters, Mrs. Bessie Johnston of New Virginia, Mrs. Inez Hart of Grimes and Leah Rowen of Wichita, Kan,; three sisters, Mrs. Mollie Roberts and Mrs. Jemima McGinnis of St. Charles and Mrs. Hester J. Switzer of Lake Worth, Fla.; two brothers, Albert S. of Ft. Madison and Wesley of Des Moines.

Johnston’s wife died in November, 1939.
