Thursday, May 1, 1902On Thursday afternoon, April 24, 1902, occurred the death of C. J. Stanley in the hospital at Clarinda. Deceased had been afflicted for about a year with general paralysis and some three months ago his condition became such it was deemed best to remove him to the hospital where he could receive the best medical attention. At the time of his removal there the physicians gave no hope to his family for his recovery and the end came as stated above. His son Charles was with him when the end came.
C. J., or Chris as he was called by his friends, was one of God’s noblemen; he was honest, industrious, and an upright citizen, and his home life—which should be the standard by which all men are judged—was without a flaw. He was a loving husband, and a kind and indulgent father, and his removal from the family circle will leave a void which nothing on earth can till.
Christopher John, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Stanley, was born in Wabash county, Indiana, on December 25, 1851; removed with his parents to Mahaska county, Iowa, in 1865, where he grew to manhood and was married to Lavina Cobb. To this union was born four children, two sons and two daughters, all of whom survive him. Deceased came to Madison county in the early eighties and with the exception of a short time spent in the West, this county had been his home since then.
Besides his immediate family he leaves an aged father and mother, and several brothers and sisters to mourn his loss.
The funeral services were held in the Friends church on last Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. H. Shipman of Corning, Iowa, a former pastor of deceased, and was attended by a large number of friends. His remains were laid to rest in the Earlham cemetery. Peace to his ashes.
