Veteran Resident Dies After Illness of About Four Days
Samuel D. Hillis, a resident of this community since childhood, died last Thursday after an illness of four days. He was 76 years of age.
Mr. Hillis was born in Davis county, Iowa, on May 17, 1863. When he was 13 years of age he came with his parents to Madison county. They settled on a farm near Macksburg, which community continued to be his home until he moved to another farm eight miles northwest of Winterset in Douglas township. Mr. Hillis was well known in the county and respected and admired by everyone.
As a young man he attended school in Winterset. He was married on Sept. 25, 1883, to Alice Mae Robinson. They were the parents of a daughter.
Mr. Hillis spent his entire life in farming, and was long an active member of the Christian church.
He is survived by his wife; the daughter, Mrs. Lester Powell; two grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Funeral services were held Sunday from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home in Winterset, in charge of the Rev. Glenwood Stanley of Indianola. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Was Resident of This County More Than Sixty Years. Funeral Sunday
Samuel D. Hillis, 76-year-old retired farmer of Madison county, died Thursday at his farm home in the Early Chapel neighborhood, following an illness of several months.
Funeral services were held at the Ramsey–Richards funeral home Sunday afternoon at two o’clock. The Rev. Glenwood Stanley, pastor of the Friends church in Indianola, conducted the service. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
Samuel D. Ellis was born in Davis county, Iowa, May 17, 1863. At the age of 13 he came to Madison county with his parents and settled on a farm near Macksburg. He attended school in Winterset and as a young man was an eager student.
He was united in marriage to Alice Mae Robinson on Sept. 25, 1883 and to this union was born one child, Arta Arminta. He was a member of the Early Chapel Christian church and up until his declining years was an active member.
The surviving relatives are his wife at home; one daughter, Mrs. Lester Powell; two grandchildren and one great grandchild, Lyle and Ethyle Powell and great grandchild Lyle Richard.
