FARMER COMMITS SUICIDE BY HANGING

S. W. Henkle Took Own Life at Farm in Madison Township

S. W. Henkle, veteran Madison township farmer, committed suicide last Thursday by hanging himself to a tree in the timber at his farm home there. He was about 67 years of age.

Mr. Henkle lived in the southeast corner of Madison township. About 9 a.m. that day he went to the timber alone, and when he did not return at noon, a search for him was started. The body was found by Mrs. John Cord, a neighbor about 12:30 p.m.

Sheriff A. E. Null was called to the scene, but no inquest was held.

Relatives and neighbors said that Mr. Henkle had been in failing health for some time, and this had caused him to grow despondent recently.

Mr. Henkle had been a resident of Madison county since coming here with his parents from his birthplace at North English, when he was 19 months old. He received his education in the Winterset schools. He was a devout member of the Methodist church since young manhood.

He was married on Dec. 15, 1897, to Bertha K. Oldham. They were the parents of five children, one of whom died in infancy. He is survived by his wife; four children, Mrs. Mable Piatt of Earlham, Mrs. Lois Spencer of Winterset, Harry Henkle of Stuart, and John Henkle of Earlham; eight grandchildren; a brother, Burt Henkle of Paonia, Colo.; and three sisters, Mrs. Edith Fritz of Menlo, and Mrs. Vernie Laidley and Mrs. Maude Harrell of Des Moines.
