November 1940

Charles R., son of James and Catherine Hadley, was born at West Newton, Indiana, September 13, 1857 and departed this life November 16, 1940 at the age of 83 years.

He was married to Almeda Hobson at Earlham, July 22, 1884. They started life together on a homestead in South Dakota, living there about eleven years. In 1897 they moved to Glenwood, Iowa, for a short time, then coming to Earlham where he spent the remainder of his life.

In 1934 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. This happy occasion with its pleasant associations was cherished as one of the bright experiences of life.

He was a birthright member of Friends, converted in early life, he became active in the work of the church. He was a devout student of the Scriptures and spent many hours perusing its sacred pages. In some localities he assisted in organizing Sunday Schools and in serving in his quiet way. He loved his home and family and was always interested in them.

His three daughters, Lora Nellis of Salem, Iowa, Amy and Martha of the home, and two grandchildren, Robert and Esther Nellis of Wichita, Kansas, survive him, besides other relatives and friends, who mourn their loss. The wife and mother passed away three years ago. He was the last surviving member of his family--two brothers and two sisters having preceeded him in death.

Dearest father, we shall miss you;
There will be a vacant chair,
When we round our hearthside gather
To enjoy the evening there.

The funeral services were held in the Friends church at 2 p.m., Monday, with the pastor in charge. Two daughters, Mrs. Cline Nellis, (Laura) and Martha were present. Amy, a patient for the past few months at Abbott's hospital, Oskaloosa, Iowa, was unable to attend.

(Burial was made in the Earlham cemetery)
