Winterset Citizen Succumbs at Age of 86 After Brief Illness
Ira J. Greenwood, one of Winterset's most widely-known citizens, died at his home here Monday after several months of rapidly failing health. He was 86 years of age.
Mr. Greenwood was one of the oldest residents of Madison county. He was a native of Nelsonville, Ohio, where he was born on July 27, 1853, the only son of John and Susan Greenwood. When he was three years old his parents moved to Winterset and this county had been his home for more than 80 years.
His marriage to Amanda Cox occurred on Jan. 23, 1880. They were the parents of 10 children, one of whom, Mrs. Pearl McKinsick, preceded him in death.
Immediately after his marriage, Mr. Greenwood started farming, an---------prospered and became one of the substantial citizens of the community. In 1916 he retired from active farming and moved into Winterset, continuing his residence here until his death. As a young man he had united with the North Branch U. P. church.
Had he lived until Jan. 23, Mr. and Mrs. Greenwood could have celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. In addition to his wife, he is survived by nine children, Mrs. Grace Betts of Grimes, Eli, Ward, and Guiher Greenwood of Winterset, Merle Greenwood of Lorimor, Charles Greenwood of Denver, Col., Mrs. Margaret Lee of Williamsburg, Mrs. Cuddie Semler of Lamoni, and Mrs. Elizabeth Amiet of Henderson, Ken. He also leaves 23 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; three brothers, Frank, Will and John Greenwood, of Fremont county; and a sister, Mrs. Emma Green of Tabor.
Funeral services were to be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home in charge of the Rev. C. E. Courtney of the Winterset United Presbyterian church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
