RICHMOND GARRETT DIES IN NEBRASKA

Veteran Educator Was Dean of Earlham Junior College for Four Years

Richmond V. Garrett, a pioneer resident of near Winterset, but for many years a resident of Fremont, Neb., died there early last week at the age of 70 years.

Mr. Garrett was born here Oct. 13, 1870, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Garrett, who were early settlers in this community. Their old home place was the farm now owned by Howard Hammans, just north of Winterset.

When he was 16 years old, the family moved to O'Neill, Neb., and in 1890 to Fremont, where his home had since been.

He was married on June 9, 1915, to Martha Ellen Leach of Winterset. He attended Fremont Normal college, Midland college, where he received a B. A. degree, Cornell university, and the University of Nebraska, where he received an M. A. degree. He served as a public school teacher for 41 yeas, during which time he was superintendent of schools at Dodge, Gretna, Ft. Calhoun, Arlington, and Mammouth Springs, Ark., and Nickerson.

For four years he was dean of the junior college at Earlham, in this county.

He is survived by his wife; an adopted son, Claude Campbell Garrett of Corpus Christi, Tex., and a brother, C. F. Garrett of El Paso, Tex. He was a brother-in-law of Mrs. M. E. Seevers and an uncle of Mrs. Walter McCorkle of this county.

R. V. GARRETT DIES IN FREMONT

Was Educator During Entire Lifetime. Died At Age of 70.

Richard (sic) Vinton Garrett, 70, veteran educator, long time resident of Fremont, Nebr., died at his home following a three-day illness. He had been in poor health for about a year.

Mr. Garrett was born in Winterset, Ia., Oct. 12, 1870, the youngest of nine children of Mr. and Mrs. William Garrett, early settlers of Iowa. He lived in Iowa until he was 16 years old when the family moved to O’Neill and in May, 1890 to Fremont where he has made his home since. On June 2, 1915 he married Martha Ellen Leach at Winterset.

Mr. Garrett attended Fremont Normal college and was graduated from the teachers’ course. Later he studied at Cornell University, Ithaca, N. Y., the University of Nebraska, and received his A. B. degree from Midland college and his master’s degree from the University of Nebraska. He was a member of the honorary societies, Pi Gamma Mu and Phi Delta Kappa.

For 41 years he was a public school teacher and during that time he was superintendent of schools at Dodge, Grenta, Fort Calhoun, Arlington, Scribner, Ia., for four years and had charge of the school at Nickerson for three years.

In 1916 when he was in the south he joined the Masons and Knights Templar.

Surviving are his wife and adopted son, Claude Campbell Garrett, of Corpus Christi, Tex.; a brother, C. F. Garrett, El Paso, Tex., and several nieces and nephews.
