Page 1Death of Mrs. Alice Holmes
Mrs. Alice Holmes, who had spent her entire life in Madison county, died at her home in the southeast part of Winterset, Tuesday, December 4th at the age of 72 years. Mrs. Holmes became critically ill with cancer several weeks ago, and her condition continued to grow worse. She died Tuesday night at 6 o'clock.
Mrs. Holmes was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Harford, pioneer settlers of Madison county, who came to Winterset in 1856, and Mr. Harford engaged in the carpenter trade. The deceased was married to Michael B. Holmes on July 4, 1878 and they started farming in Scott township. They continued to make their home in this township and Mr. Holmes died February 6, 1894. Mrs. Holmes and her six children remained on the farm and carried on the interests there, until in December 1912 when she moved to Winterset.
She is survived by five children; S. D. Holmes and Mrs. Essie Worley, Fred Holmes and M. B. Holmes of Madison county and Albert Holmes of Leeds, North Dakota. One daughter, Mrs. Beulah Jones died seven years ago.
Rev. John T. Hall will conduct the funeral services Thursday afternoon, December 5th at 2 o'clock at the Baptist church. Burial will be in the Winterset cemetery.

Alice Harford, daughter of David A. and Mary Harford was born in Winterset, July 28, 1857, and died at her home here December 3, 1929. Her whole life was spent in this community.
On July 4, 1878 she was united in marriage to Michael D. Holmes who died February 6, 1894. Four boys and two girls blessed their union; Starling Holmes, Mrs. Essie Worley, Fred Holmes and M. B. Holmes of Winterset; Albert Holmes of York, North Dakota, and Mrs. Beulah Jones, who died several years ago.
In addition to her membership in the Baptist church, she was a member of the Women's Relief Corps and the local W.C.T.U. and her kindly counsel will be greatly missed. In brief, Mrs. Holmes was a faithful Christian, a helpful wife, a loving mother and a loyal friend.
Services for her were held at the First Baptist church at 2 o'clock on Thursday afternoon, December 5th with the pastor, Rev. John T. Hall officiating. The Women's Relief Corps conducted their service at the close of the sermon. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
