Mrs. A. J. Nichols died a week ago at her home in Fremont, Nebraska, following a heart attack. Funeral services were held last Tuesday at 2:30 o'clock, at the Fred Bader chapel in Fremont, Rev. William Hull of the Baptist church officiating. Burial was in the Ridge cemetery.
Mrs. Nichols was born February 7, 1854 in Madison county. When 7 years of age, she moved with her parents to Hendricks county, Indiana, where the family resided two years and then returned to their home in Iowa.
On December 15, 1872, she was united in marriage to A. J. Nichols of Winterset. In 1876 the young couple moved to Doniphan, Nebraska and resided on a farm there until 1910, when they moved to Fremont. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1922.
There are seven children living, one dying in infancy. Those surviving her are, her husband and children, Mrs. Celie Dillow, Mrs. Ora Lee Karr, both of Lincoln; Mrs. J. H. Williams of Dawson, Nebraska; A. R. Nichols of Denver, Colorado; A. M. Nichols of San Diego, California; Mrs. Ray Mongey of Oconto; and Mrs. Leon R. Dillard of Page. She also leaves five brothers, M. J. Garrett, C. F. Garrett, E. O. Garrett, J. M. Garrett and R. V. Garrett; and one sister, Mrs. Ella Whiteneck. R. V. Garrett is dean of the Junior college at Earlham. She was also a foster mother of S. A. Hays, Winterset attorney.
Mrs. Nichols' father, William Garrett, came to Winterset when the town consisted of three log houses. This was in 1849. He taught the first school in the north half of the county. Her husband was a nephew of Nat Guiberson.
