MRS. W. S. COOPER PASSED LAST WEEK

Well-Known Winterset Woman Died Wednesday at Her Home Here

Mrs. W. S. Cooper, well known Winterset resident, died at her home here last Wednesday, July 24th, at 6:30 in the evening. She had been in poor health for the past eighteen months and had been seriously ill the week previous to her death.

The deceased was born Edith Wainwright, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Wainwright, the former a prominent attorney of Madison county for many years prior to his death. Mrs. Cooper, who was 65 years of age, had always made her home in Winterset. She was graduated from the local high school and attended Leland Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Her marriage to William S. Cooper was solemnized December 4, 1902, and they established their home on West Washington street. Upon the death of her mother, Mrs. Wainwright, the Coopers moved to the old Wainwright home, and this has since been their home, and a center of hospitality for relatives, friends, and community.

In girlhood Mrs. Cooper became a member of the Presbyterian church. She has always been active in the work of the local church, and also served for several years as president of the Des Moines Presbyterial.

She became a member of Chapter AG, P.E.O., in 1894; was one of the founders of the Fortnightly club, a member of the library board, and served for many years on the board of the State Federation of Women's clubs. When the Girl Reserves were first organized in the Winterset high school, Mrs. Cooper became their sponsor.

First of all, a wife and mother, Mrs. Cooper was devoted to her family and home. But she reached out beyond this to the community in which she spent her life and was always ready to aid in any worth while activity, whether religious, civic, or social, and the Cooper home was always open to such attain.

Mrs. Cooper is survived by her husband, Judge W. S. Cooper, judge of the fifth judicial district; their two children, Miss Bertha of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Wainwright Cooper, of Arlington, Virginia; and one sister, Mrs. Bertha Guiher of Winterset. She also leaves a grandson, Richard Buck Cooper of Washington, D.C.

Funeral services for Mrs. Cooper were conducted at the First Presbyterian church by the Rev. Sampson Cocks of Indianola, and the Rev. W. P. Fink, last Friday at 10:30 a.m., with burial in the Winterset cemetery. The casket bearers were Charles Van Werden, Phil Wilkinson, Shirley Webster, John Hartley, Daniel Gallery and Gordon Harmon.
