Long-Time Resident of This County Succumbed at Home of Daughter
Mrs. Alice Brown, long-time resident of Madison county, died in Des Moines last Friday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emma Bowlsby, where she had lived for the past three years. She was 89 years old.
Mrs. Brown was a native of Thornton, Ind., where she was born on Sept. 8, 1850. At an early age she moved with her parents to Madison county where she spent the remainder of her life until going to Des Moines three years ago.
In 1867 she was married to Mahlon Harvey Brown, who preceded her in death in 1920. They were the parents of eight children, one son,William E. Brown, preceding the mother in death, and another son dying in infancy.
Mrs. Brown united with the Methodist church here in 1881, and had been a member since then.
She is survived by six children, Mrs. Emma Bowlsby of Des Moines, Mrs. Elva Fredrickson of Alexandria, Minn., Mrs. Carrie Devey of Alpine, Utah, Mrs. Mamie Holmes of Hensler, N. Dak., Frank Brown of Winterset, and Mrs. Nellie Harris of Adel; a sister, Mrs. Catherine Armstrong of Winterset; and 17 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday from the Methodist church in Winterset, in charge of the Rev. A. P. Keast, pastor of Trinity Methodist church in Des Moines, assisted by the Rev. J. R. McNichols, pastor of the local church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
