Former Union Township Man Was Pioneer in North Dakota
Pleasant Brittain, more familiarly known as "Steve" Brittain, a well known former resident of Madison county, died at Lisbon, N. Dak., on Monday of last week after a stroke of apoplexy.
Mr. Brittain was the son of Alfred and Julia Brittain, pioneer settlers in Union township of this county, where he was born on Feb. 10, 1868.
On April 3, 1901, he married Theresa Mueller of Jefferson township. They moved to North Dakota in 1903, farming for a while at Elliott before moving to Lisbon in 1918.
In North Dakota he pioneered in a new country, and became one of the most substantial and prosperous citizens in Ransom county.
He belonged to the Yeoman lodge, was president of the Ransom County Farmers Mutual Insurance company, and was a director of the Elliott Farmers Supply company. He belonged to the Methodist church and was known for his work in promoting athletics for boys.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. George Smith of Harlowton, Mont., and Mrs. C. E. Murdock of Elliott; six brothers, Newt Brittain of Olympia, Wash., Bill Brittain of San Diego, Cal., and Seth, David, John and Bob Brittain of Winterset; and two sisters, Mrs. Roy Preston and Mrs. A. D. Guiberson of this county.
Funeral services were held last Wednesday from the Methodist church at Lisbon, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. A. K. Smith.
