Margaret Smith, Lorimor

F. Margaret Smith, 84, of Afton and formerly of Lorimor, died June 10, 2007, at the Afton Care Center.

Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, June 13) at Powers Funeral Home in Creston with Pastor Dwayne Henrichs officiating. Burial was at Greenlawn Cemetery in rural Afton.

F. Margaret Smith was born Oct. 30, 1922, to William August and N. Ada (Rusk) Nitzsche of rural Lorimor and was a 1939 graduate of Arispe High School. Margaret continued her education at the Iowa Beauty School in Des Moines, receiving certification in cosmetology. For five years, she practiced cosmetology in the towns of Zearing and Clarinda.

Her marriage to Raymond M. Smith took place Jan. 1, 1944. At the beginning of their marriage, they farmed north of Afton. In 1946, they moved to a farm on the REA Road, west of Lorimor, where they resided for nearly 60 years. Margaret served two terms on the Union County 4-H Girls Committee. She also was active in the Afton Federated Garden Club and Lakeshore Country Club Cards and Chatter. She had been a resident of the Afton Care Center since March of 2007.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Bettie Woodley.

She is survived by a sister, Lois Smith of Afton, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Greater Regional Medical Center or the Afton Federated Garden Club for a 4-H award in horticulture or Union County Fair Sweepstakes Award in flower gardening.
