Obituary

“God giveth and God taketh away,” in the shadow of this great sorrow.

We have met to pay the last sad rites of love and respect to the memory of one whose spirit has returned to the God who gave it. Our friends die and leave our hearts and homes desolate for a time. Death is a gate that opens out towards the house “eternal” in the heavens: where we loose them Heaven gains them. On January 7th 1931 as the children had gathered together in the home and the shadows of night had fallen the white winged angel of death in its purity hovered around and claimed another of its own. We have learned from the devine words of truth to be ready and watching for we know not the time when the son of man cometh, but blessed is he whom the Lord finds watching. A life has passed on in that of Mary Davis Strong, the last of her father’s family. She was born April 19th, 1858 in High Point, North Carolina, being 72 years, eight months and 19 days of age.

She married to William Franklin Srong (Strong) in 1874 and to this union were born nine children, one dying in infancy and these are C. B. Strong of Sawer (Sawyer), N. Dak., Jim Strong and Elvin Strong and Bell Maulsby, of Earlham, Elvie Strong, of Stuart, Albert Strong, of Winterset, Edith Reed, of Des Moines, and William Strong, whose location is not know at the present time. The husband and father passed away January 28, 1918.

Mary Strong was brought up in the belief of the conservative Quakers and early in life heard the Shepard calling His sheep and answered the call by giving her heart to Him. Conditions later placed her in connection with the United Brethren Church. Coming to Earlham in 1898.

Mary Strong was a home mother and as health conditions and heavy duties came upon her, we could find her Christian spirit shining in the home as she went about her service for those about her never too weary to pass kind works and words on she bore her last months of sickness with much patience and love.

Besides her children she leaves to mourn their loss seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bock officiating.
