OPAL CHILCOTE IS DROWNING VICTIM

Former Winterset Girl and Twin Niece and Nephew Die in California

Relatives in Madison county were notified Sunday evening of the death by drowning Saturday of Opal Chilcote, formerly well known Winterset girl.

Few details of the tragedy, which also took the lives of her niece and nephew, 15-year-old twin children of her eldest sister, were available here.

Miss Chilcote had been making her home in Fresno, Cal., since 1940. The accident occurred when a boat, in which she and the children, Dorothy and Claude, Jr., were passengers, overturned in a bay. The twins were the children of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Miller of Fresno. Mrs. Miller was the former Irene Chilcote. The children had visited here with their grandmother in 1939 and in 1934.

According to the information reaching here, all 11 persons on the boat were drowned.

Miss Chilcote was 31 years of age, and most of her life had been spent in Madison county and Des Moines. She was a graduate of the St. Charles high school, and after that worked in Winterset for two years in the office of Doctors Hickenlooper and Decker. In 1923 she completed a 3-year nurses training course at the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines. Since then she had been engaged in the profession of nursing in Winterset, at the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines, and in California.

She was the daughter of Thomas and Estella Gripp Chilcote. She was born at Hanley, but most of her childhood was spent near Cheyenne, Wyo.

Miss Chilcote is survived by her mother, who now lives in Fresno; and nine sisters and brothers: Mrs. Irene Miller of Fresno, Barton Chilcote of Winterset; Mrs. Gladys Stringaham of Spencer; Mrs. Pearl Grace DeVault, Alva, Thomas, Betty and Robert Chilcote, all of Fresno. She also leaves a half-sister, Mrs. Edna Patterson, and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Gripp of St. Charles.

Funeral services and burial were in Fresno.
