WILLIAM R. COX DIES

Word has been received here of the death of William R. Cox of Estelline, South Dakota, a former Winterset reisdent. Mr. Cox, who was 64 years of age, died at the hospital in Watertown, South Dakota, Wednesday, Dec. 10th, following a short illness.

Mr. Cox was a son of John and Nancy Cox and was born in Winterset, Dec. 15, 1877. Here he was married to Nellie O. Young, daughter of William and Nancy Young of St. Charles, March 7, 1906. They moved to South Dakota a number of years ago, and he has been a mail carrier there for the past twenty-three years. He joined the United Brethren church in his youth, but when he moved to South Dakota, changed his membership to the Congregational church.

Mrs. Cox died January 2, 1941. They leave their one daughter, Mrs. Theodore Larson of Estelline, and a grandson, Calvin Larson. He also leaves one brother, Roy Cox of Winterset, and two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Nelson of Des Moines, and Mrs. Ed Addy of Earlham, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at Estelline, Dec. 14th, and burial was made in the Hillcrest cemetery there.

Former Madison Resident Dies In Dakota

Word has been received here of the death of William Riley Cox in Estelline, South Dakota, who was the son of the late John and Nancy McDonald Cox of Madison county.

Both his parental and maternal grandparents were early settlers of Madison county, coming from Ohio in the latter part of the 50’s, settling in Union and Jefferson township’s on or near North River. Both families were active and prominent in the social, political and business life of that community.

William McDonald, after whom Mr. Cox was named, lived in Sec. 33, Jefferson township. He was elected a member of the Board of Supervisors in 1861 and served continually until 1869. He was also active in the United Presbyterian church and was a charter member.

When McDonald Cemetery in Jefferson, near the present United Brethren church, was on his farm and given by him. All of his children are now deceased.

The parental grandfather of Mr. Cox was Eli Cox who lived on North river near the Cox Covered bridge in Union which he built in the early 70’s. He was a carpenter and contractor and built many of the early school houses, bridges, barns and dwellings in the north part of the County. The covered bridge in the east part of Crawford township, over North river was built by him in 1869 and is still standing today and doing duty.

The last building of Mr. Cox erected before his death in March, 1885, was the large barn in Union township for George Mueller. He also was a member of the Board of Supervisors, serving in 1867 and ’68.

Mr. and Mrs. Riley Cox made occasional visits with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William C. Young, while they resided in St. Charles. Mrs. Cox died on January 2, 1941. Mr. Cox had been a mail carrier at Estelline over 23 years and web retired this year.
