KINNEY DIES IN JAP PRISON CAMP

Winterset Sailor Captured by Japanese in Manila Bay Area

Just nine days after arrival of a card saying that he was alive and well, official notification was received here last Saturday that Kenneth Kinney formerly of Winterset, had died in a Japanese military prison.

The word was received from the U. S. War department by his mother, Mrs. C. E. Kinney, now of Bondurant. Death was attributed to cerebral malaria, according to the war department information.

Thus Kinney becomes the sixth Madison county man to die in the service of his country in this war. Two other sailors were killed in action at Pearl Harbor and three Madison county airplane pilots have died in crashes.

Kinney lived for many years in Winterset, attended high school here and graduated with the class of 1939. Shortly after graduation he enlisted in the U. S. navy and when the Japs attacked Pearl Harbor he was serving aboard the minesweeper "Quail" in the Philippines. He served there until the fall of Corregidor, when he was captured by the Japanese.

For about a year after his capture, Mrs. Kinney received no word of her son. Then she finally received notice from the War department that Kenneth was being held as a prisoner of war by the enemy. Finally on Aug. 26, she received a form card, signed by her son, from a Japanese prison camp. This was followed just nine days later by news of his death.

The young sailor is survived by his mother, who now lives in Bondurant; two brothers, Donald Kinney of Altoona and Ray Kinney of Des Moines; and two sisters, Mrs. Leonard Smith of Bondurant and Mrs. Irene Smith of Florida.

KINNEY MEMORIAL SERVICES SUNDAY

To Pay Tribute to Former W. H. S. Student at Bondurant

Memorial services for Kenneth H. Kinney of the U. S. navy, who died recently in a Japanese prison camp, will be held at Bondurant, his former home, next Sunday.

The rites will be held at 2 p.m. in the auditorium of the Bondurant high school, in charge of the Rev. V. F. Johnson, pastor of the Church of Christ there.

Kinney is the son of Mrs. Monte Kinney who is now making her home at the Cliff Robinson home near Winterset. The young man attended high school here and graduated with the class of 1939. He enlisted in the navy and was serving in the Philippines when the war broke out.

Kinney was taken prisoner when the Japanese conquered the islands and nothing was heard from him until this August. A short time after receiving this first and only message from her son, Mrs. Kinney received notice that he had died in the Japanese prison camp.
