Earlham and Vicinity

Died, at his home south of Earlham, Friday, Sept. 9, 1892, Walter Franklin Hill, son of B. Hill, age 21 years and six months. This is one of the saddest items which we have ever been called upon to chronicle. Frank, as he was familiarly called by every one had lived in this vicinity all his life, and by his noble character, and genial disposition had won a warm place in the hearts of all who knew him. None knew him but to love him. He was taken sick on Friday, one week before his death, with typhillitis, an inflammation of the vermiform appendix. The case was alarming from the start, and in a short time his condition was regarded as critical by the attending physician. On Friday, the 9th of September, it was decided that an operation was imperative, and would give him a possible chance for recovery, whereas there was no chance whatever without it. Drs., Treat, Kersey, and McCarty, of Stuart, and Maulsby, of Earlham, performed the operation about noon. The operation in itself was a success, but the vitality of the patient was not sufficient, and he gradually grew weaker, until death came at 10:05 p.m.

The funeral was held Sunday at 3 o’clock p.m. at the Friends church under the direction of the I.O.O.F., of which the deceased was a member. The sermon was preached by the Rev. Henry Pickett, of Linn, Indiana, and was heard by the largest concourse of sorrowing friends, that ever assembled on a similar occasion in Earlham, the church only seating about one-third of the number in attendance. The body was then borne to the Earlham cemetery, and laid at rest in a grave lined with evergreens and flowers, to await the summons. The bereaved parents and relatives have the sympathy of the entire community in their hour of sorrow, in the lighting of this young life so full of promise.

Quite a number of Odd Fellows from Dexter and De Soto assisted in the funeral rites of Frank Hill Sunday. There were sixty-eight brothers in the sad procession that marched to the last resting place of the beloved brother.
