Menary Swain Garrett, son of Evan and Lydia Garrett was born near Richmond, Indiana, November 7, 1857. At the age of ten he moved to Dallas county, Iowa, and spent his remaining life in Madison and Dallas counties.
On March 7, 1886, he was married to Margaret Emma Hodson, who passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 1925.
To them were born six children, Mrs. Harry McKibben, Mrs. Earl Ramsey, Bruce E., Kenneth G., and Paul H., of Earlham and Gladys Pearson who preceded him in death, January 10, 1942.
He was a member of the De Soto I.O.O.F. lodge No. 400, admitted in January 1880, later transferred his membership to Earlham lodge No. 546 and also the Marguerite Rebekah lodge No. 233.
Mr. Garrett has been in failing health for the past two years. Since then has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Earl Ramsey and cared for by his children.
He passed peacefully away at 6:15 p.m., April 8 at the age of 85 years, five months and one day.
His love for his family was a constant source of enjoyment. Although he had his share of sorrow, he was of a cheerful disposition and loved and respected by all who knew him.
He leaves to mourn his loss his five children, one grandson, Nile McKibben, and one great grandson Darrell McKibben, five sisters and other relatives and a host of friends. One brother, preceded him in death.
Father reached the end of life's journey;
Like the beautiful setting sun.
After years of honor and usefulness
His earthly work is done.
