ELMER L. HUGHES PASSES SUDDENLY

Winterset Citizen Succumbs to Heart Attack at Tribune, Kan.

Elmer L. Hughes, widely-known Winterset resident, died at Tribune, Kan., on Wednesday of last week of a heart attack. He was 61 years old.

Mr. Hughes' death occurred suddenly. He and Mrs. Hughes had gone to Kansas on a business trip and he was stricken as he entered his car as it was parked down town in the city of Tribune. He died almost instantly.

Mr. Hughes was born near Spring Hill in Warren county. He was the son of Davis and Clara (Romine) Hughes. In 1902 at Spring Hill, he was married to Nina Mabel Callahan. They were the parents of twin sons, Donald Hughes now of Burbank, Cal., and Ronald Hughes now of Fresno, Cal.

Mr. Hughes had made his home in Winterset for many years. He was long engaged in the retail business here. He also engaged in the real estate business. In addition to Winterset he had lived at Royal, Rossie, Macksburg an Knoxville, all in this state.

He is survived by his wife, and the two sons; one grandson, Howard Donald Hughes; his parents of Norwalk; a brother, J. W. Hughes of Independence; and two sisters, Mrs. Guy Higens of West Des Moines and Mrs. M. A. Mortenson of Linn Grove.

Funeral services were held from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home on Tuesday of this week, conducted by the Revs. Floyd and Linda Tolby of Knoxville. Pall bearers were H. C. Gleason and Howard Vaughn of Knoxville, F. A. Bonham of Macksburg, L. H. Hills, E. E. Douglas and C. C. Ewick of Winterset and Joe Havelin and Lyle Higens of Des Moines.

ELMER L. HUGHES DIED FEB. 24TH

Elmer Leroy Hughes, age 61, died Wednesday, February 24, in Tribune, Kansas, following a heart attack. Mr. Hughes was on a business trip and had been accompanied by his wife when he suffered a heart attack while sitting in his parked automobile. Funeral services were held at the Ramsey and Richard Funeral Home in Winterset, Tuesday, at 2:30 p.m., with Rev. Mrs. Tobey in charge, and assisted by Rev. Tobey, both of Knoxville. Interment was in the Winterset cemetery.

Mr. Hughes was born Sept. 28, 1881 near Spring Hill, Warren county, Iowa, to Clara and David Hughes. He was united in marriage to Nina Mabel Callahan in the year 1902 at Spring Hill, Iowa. To this union twin sons were born.

Mr. Hughes has made his home in Winterset for many years, and his business interests were mostly with meat markets and real estate. He had resided at different times in the Royal, Rossie, Macksburg and Knoxville, Iowa.

Besides his wife he is survived by twin sons, Donald Hughes of Burbank, California, and Ronald Hughes of Fresno, California; one grandson, Howard Donald Hughes; his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. David Hughes of Norwalk, Iowa; a brother, J. W. Hughes of Independence, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Guy Higens of West Des Moines and Mrs. M. A. Mortenson of Linn Grove, Iowa; besides nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
