MRS. A. J. SHAFFER DIED LAST FRIDAY

Long-Time Resident Passed at Advanced Age of 92 Years

Mrs. Andrew J. Shaffer of Douglas township, one of Madison county's oldest residents, died last Friday at the age of 92 years. She had been an invalid for several years.

Mrs. Shaffer was a member of a pioneer Douglas township family. She was the former Margaret Ann Cowden, daughter of David and Sarah Cowden, and was born in Gurnsey county, Ohio, on May 6, 1848. She came to this county with her parents when 9 years old, traveling in a covered wagon.

She was united in marriage here to Andrew J. Shaffer. Mr. Shaffer died in 1937.

They were the parents of four children. Three of them, Effie, Bert and Clarence preceded their mother in death.

She joined the United Presbyterian church of Pitzer on June 3, 1876.

She is survived by her son, Clyde G. Shaffer; four granddaughters, Ora Barr and Meredith Hewitt of Lowrel, Mont., and Dorothy Allen and Edith Shaffer of Winterset; six great grandchildren; and three sisters, Miss Sadie Cowden and Mrs. Dot Moore of Winterset, and Mrs. Etna Henderson of Colony, Kan.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home in charge of the Rev. C. E. Courtney, pastor of the United Presbyterian church of Winterset. Burial was made in the Stringtown cemetery.
