SAMUEL SPENCE OF WINTERSET PASSES

Native of Scotland, Veteran Resident, Died Here Tuesday

Samuel Spence, for many years a farmer in Douglas township, died here Tuesday at the home of his son, John Spence, in Winterset. He was 82 years of age, and had been in failing health for some time.

Mr. Spence was a native of Scotland, where he was born in Stranrawer on Jan. 1, 1859, the son of John and Mary Spence. As a youth he became a sailor, and at the age of 21 years came to America and settled in Allegheney, Pa. He later came to Madison county.

He was married here to Frances Clokely Thompson on Jan. 30, 1890. They made their home in Douglas township. His wife died in 1896. He continued in Douglas township until five years ago, when ill health forced him to leave the farm and make his home with his son, John Spence in Winterset.

In early life he was baptized into the Church of Scotland, and later affiliated with the United Presbyterian church at Pitzer, where he had been a member for over 50 years.

He is survived by his son, John Spence of Winterset, another son, Thomas Spence of California, three grandchildren, Josephine and Wallace Spence, and Mrs. Frances Duff; and one great grandson, Kenneth John Duff.

Funeral services were held Wednesday from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home, in charge of the Rev. C. E. Courtney, pastor of the United Presbyterian church. Burial will be made at Aledo, Ill., Thursday afternoon.
