Death of Mrs. Louisa Brown

Mrs. Louisa Brown, one of the oldest residents of Madison county died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sam Brown, Tuesday, April 10th, at the age of 90 years. Mrs. Brown who was the former Louisa Phipps, was born in Edgar county, Illinois, and came to this county when she was a girl fifteen years of age. They came here in a covered wagon.

Her marriage to Tyre Landers took place in 1859 and they were the parents of four children, James, Archie, Russell and Octavia all of whom have preceded her in death. Mr. Landers died April 17, 1868.

On February 11, 1872, she was married to John Barber, who died August 19, 1918. The deceased was familiarly known as “Grandma Barber,” and she was an active member of the Christian church, which she joined, when she was a young girl.

She is survived by three sons and two daughters: Mrs. Sam Brown and George Barber of Winterset; Mrs. Wilbur McKanna of Three Forks, Montana and Arthur and Walter Barber of Nebraska. She also leaves 30 grandchildren 18 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.

The Rev. H. L. Olmstead, pastor of the Winterset Church of Christ conducted her funeral services at the Union Chapel church, Thursday afternoon, April 12th, at two o’clock. Burial was in the Union Chapel cemetery.
