Wednesday, February 2, 1944M. J. SMITH DIES
M. J. Smith, life-long resident of Lincoln township, died at his home southwest of Winterset Wednesday, Feb. 2nd, shortly before 8 o'clock. Mr. Smith had eaten his breakfast and gone outdoors, but came back to the house where a sudden heart attack caused his death.
Mr. Smith who was 73 years of age, was born in Lincoln township on the farm near which he had lived all his life. He leaves his wife (the former Rosa Acheson) and their three children; Mabel at home and Arthur Smith and Mrs. D. E. Henderson of Winterset. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. J. A. Hale of West Liberty, Mrs. Maggie Daniels of Salina, Kan., and Mrs. M. C. Leinard of Tacoma, Wash.
Definite funeral arrangements had not been made when the Madisonian went to press, but it was thought they would be Friday afternoon.

M. J. Smith, born June 27, 1870, passed away Feb. 2, 1944, at the age of 73 years, 4 months and 25 days. He was the oldest child of James and Martha Smith and was born on the adjoining farm so has lived all his life in the same vicinity. He was married March 24, 1895 to Rosa Acheson and they were parents of three children, Mabel at home, Edith Henderson and Arthur Smith.
"Jay" as he was always known, represents one of the early pioneer families of Lincoln township in the Beerbower school district. There are seven grandsons, Russell Jay, Emmett Wayne, Carl Richard, Harold Dean, Glenn Alvin, Orval Lee, and Loran Arthur Henderson.
Also three sisters, Mrs. M. C. Leinard of Tacoma, Wash., Mrs. Nina Hale of West Liberty and Mrs. Maggie Daniels, Salina, Kan.
