Succumbs After Illness of More Than Four Months
John E. Addy, a long-time resident of Lincoln township, died at the Winterset hospital Tuesday after a long illness. He had been in the hospital four months following a stroke of paralysis. He was 77 years of age.
Mr. Addy was a native of Ohio but lived most of his life in Madison county. He was married here to Eliza Ellen McDonald on Sept. 3, 1890. They lived in Jefferson, Webster and Douglas townships before moving to Lincoln township where they lived -- years, with the exception of two years in Winterset.
On Sept. 3 of last year they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in Winterset.
Mrs. Addy died on April 5 of this year. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. John Spence, Mrs. John McKee and Mrs. Carl Wagner, all of Winterset; a sister, Miss Ella Addy of Van Meter; eight grandchildren and one great grandson.
Funeral services will be held this Thursday from the U. P. church here, in charge of the Rev. Walter Stewart of Des Moines. Burial will be made in the U.B. cemetery in Jefferson township.

John Edgar Addy was born in Guernsey county, Ohio, January 11, 1864. He was one of eleven children born to Marion and Hannah Addy. At the age of 17 he came to Madison county, Iowa with his parents, in a covered wagon and settled in Union township. A few months later the family moved to a farm in Jefferson township. This farm has been the parental home ever since in the only one surviving of this large family lives there, his sister Ella.
Mr. Addy was united to Lida McDonald on September 3, 1890 and may establish their home near their. To this union three daughters were born – Gertrude, Elsie and Mary.
After living in Webster, Douglas and Madison townships, they moved to their farm in Lincoln Township where the last 32 years of their married life was spent with the exception of two years spent in Winterset. He loved to live on the farm.
Became a member of the Winterset United Presbyterian church, where he was a faithful active member being an elder in the church for many years.
September 3, 1940 Mr. and Mrs. Addy celebrated their Golden wedding anniversary which was a very happy occasion their lives. The short time after this Mrs. Addy’s health began to fail rapidly and she passed away at her home April 15, 1941. During her illness Mr. Addy was afflicted with paralysis from which he never recovered. He passed away at the Winterset hospital Tuesday morning, July 22, at the age of 77 years and 6 months.
He leaves three daughters, Mrs. John Spence, Mrs. John McKee and Mrs. Carl Wagner, eight grandchildren and one great grandson all of Winterset, one sister, Ella, of Van Meter, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the Winterset United Presbyterian church with Rev. W. J. Stewart of Grinnell in charge. Burial was in the McDonald cemetery in Jefferson township.
