VERNE DOWNS, U. S. NAVY, DIED RECENTLY

Son of C. E. Downs, St. Charles Had Served 22 Years in U. S. Navy

Verne Downs, a chief petty officer in the U. S. Navy, died recently in a hospital at Norfold, Va., according to word received by his father, C. E. Downs of St. Charles.

Downs, whose early life was spent in the St. Charles community had been serving in the navy for 22 years, and had risen to the rank of chief machinist's mate. He had been stationed at Norfolk since January, after having returned from 10 months of overseas duty in the war zone.

He had recently undergone two major operations.

The body was taken to Seattle, Wash., for burial. He is survived by his wife, of that city; his father; a brother, Kenneth Downs, of the U. S. Marines, who is stationed in California; and two sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Clarke of St. Charles and Mrs. Dorothy Mefford of Pomeroy.
